Brief Description

Ireland was an active participant in the negotiations of the European Union’s Violence Against Women Directive, which took place prior to its approval by the European Parliament in April 2024, and its adoption by the Council on 7 May 2024. The Directive aims to ensure effective prevention of such violence, protection from violence, access to justice, victim support, and strengthened coordination across the EU. It includes offences specifically against technology assisted gender-based violence, including in relation to non-consensual sharing of intimate or manipulated material, cyber stalking, cyber harassment and cyber incitement to violence or hatred. The Directive, which has to be transposed by 2027, provides a framework within which Ireland will take action in this area.
